September is National Apple Month so there is no better time to add some nutritious and seasonal apple dishes into your family’s dinner rotation.
Not only do apples provide a healthy dose of Vitamin C, recent research done by the “American Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementia’s” determined that apple juice when taken in certain amounts can reduce maladaptive behaviors in patients suffering from dementia. It also was found to improve a patient's mood. As such researchers are now reccommending that Alzheimer's patients drink at least 8 ounces of apple juice a day in order to reap the newly discovered benefits.
While you are doing it you can even dazzle your children with a fun apple fact and challenge them to beat the world’s record for the longest apple peel.
The world’s largest apple peel was created in 1976 and was a whopping 172 feet 4 inches in length. Parent’s can find more apple trivia on the U.S. Apple Association’s website.
Most apple recipes call for canned apples, but don’t be afraid to use fresh apples instead. You can take your family with you to any “pick-your-own” apple orchards have fun picking a bushel of your favorite apple types. Many of the orchards at this time of year also feature hay rides as an extra family friendly activity.
Here is an easy to make apple fritter that you may want to try. The phyllo dough provides a light and flaky crust that embraces the sweet apple filling in the most delicious of ways.
Apple Fritters
To make the “Apple Fritters” you will need to assemble the following ingredients;
- 20 ounces apple pie filling
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup cinnamon
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup melted butter
- 1 box store bought phyllo dough
- Lay out the phyllo dough onto your work surface. Combine the 1 cup melted butter and 1 cup oil together until well blended. Baste the phyllo dough with the butter oil mixture making sure to coat it evenly. Place the apple filling into one corner of the phyllo dough and fold it into triangles. Repeat until all the phyllo dough and filling is used.
- Next, combine the sugar and cinnamon together and sprinkle it over the stuffed phyllo dough.
- Proceed by placing the stuffed phyllo dough triangles onto a lightly greased cookie sheet and bake them in a preheated 350 Degree F oven until they are golden brown. This should take approximately 8 to 12 minutes. Serve them piping hot with a scoop of premium hard vanilla ice cream on the side.
